OSAKA Mapping Parties

At State of the Map Asia 2026 OSAKA, we will not only discuss open map data. We will also host Mapping Parties, a traditional OpenStreetMap community field-mapping event where participants walk through the city and create maps themselves.

What Is a Mapping Party?

Mapping Parties are participatory community events where people visit a place and update OpenStreetMap (OSM) data through fieldwork. Compared with Mapathons, which are held online without visiting the site, mapping parties tend to collect fresher, more local information. Mapping may sound technical or difficult, but no specialist knowledge is required. Even first-time OSM users and people who have never edited a map can join and enjoy the experience.

One of the biggest strengths of this event is that it welcomes beginners and new participants. Experienced mappers and specialists will also be there, but people who are just starting to explore OSM are equally important participants. Because you can learn how to use the tools and how to collect data from the ground up, the event also works as a hands-on training opportunity for getting to know OSM.

At a mapping party, participants typically form teams and walk around the city together to collect information. They may use paper maps such as Field Papers to note what they notice, or record streetscapes, buildings, landmarks, and other details with smartphones or digital cameras. Instead of working only at a desk, participants observe the character of the neighborhood while walking, rediscovering local charm with the feeling of a stroll or a treasure hunt.

Since OpenStreetMap was born in 2004, many different mapping parties have been held around the world.
